Duerr's - Case Study

About : Duerr's is a family-owned business operating in the preserves sector since 1881 and is the UK's largest producer of peanut butter.

As of today, a team of over 250 based in Manchester works on a product range that includes jams, marmalades, peanut butter, condiments, and honey. It supplies products under Duerr's label and produces home-branded labels for some of the UK's largest retailers.

Key Facts

  • Over 1,500 training courses supplied in under 12 months across a workforce of over 250 users in areas including Food Hygiene, Health & Safety, and site-specific Training Modules.
  • Uses the platform's Training & Compliance Matrix Feature to keep Teams and Departments updated on current and projected levels of compliance across the business.
  • Site-specific training modules were created using PowerPoint to SCORM Conversion and delivered on the LMS.

The Challenge

With Duerr's growing to a total headcount of over 250 staff members, classroom training would not be a viable option to ensure all the necessary compliance courses were delivered across the organisation as and when required.

Being a large Manufacturer, Duerr's had a significant number of teams requiring Food Hygiene and Safety related training courses but also had teams needing annual Health and Safety Training and office-based teams needing to complete other courses such as Anti-Bribery, Anti-Money Laundering and GDPR Awareness.

With such a diverse mix of teams across the business all requiring different mandatory training courses, Duerr's wanted to adopt an online training platform that would meet their ongoing requirements for mandatory training and allow them to host their site-specific training courses, which were at that time conducted in a classroom setting for cohorts of 10-12 employees or accessed via PowerPoint presentations from the company's network for office-based staff.

"We knew that we needed a platform which offered various courses to cover our broad mandatory training needs, but we also wanted to find a provider which offered a comprehensive library of Food Hygiene and HACCP-related training at Levels 1, 2 & 3. Train4Academy provides all the necessary courses and has various additional courses to help our employees gain further knowledge"

The Solution

Duerr's initially began using the platform by ordering course units in batches at the site to trial the platform to ensure, before switching to the Academy Training License (Enterprise) due to the number of courses required across the site in the longer term. This meant they could move to a purchasing model where the total annual costs for the platform and all training were fixed and based on the number of users rather than having various invoices raised yearly for different amounts.

Once their Training Management Suite was set up, Rebekah and the team could allocate training courses across the business to their different departments and teams. This was made all the easier as the platform's Training & Compliance Matrix was already tracking which courses were required and how often to be refreshed by each of the enrolled users – meaning Rebekah could use the platform's Mass Allocation feature to allocate all of the training modules out automatically, rather than one at a time.

"The Training Matrix has been a really useful tool. Viewing the breakdown of compliance by course, department, team, or individual has been so helpful. This has allowed us to look at our potential weak spots and helps us prioritise where we need to be. The Mass Allocation feature on the platform is also a huge time saver. We can allocate hundreds of courses across our learners in seconds with very little admin. Everyone is notified by email or a message sent to their line manager and can access their training immediately."

Rebekah and the team also moved ahead with a project to convert a range of their Site-Specific PowerPoint Presentations to SCORM E-Learning Modules so that these could also be delivered from the LMS. This training had previously been delivered through PowerPoint Presentations in a classroom, with assessments completed on paper in cohorts of 10-12 users at a time. By moving the training to the LMS, the L&D Team could now train these modules out far more effectively and productively, ensuring new employees gain access to the Site-Specific Training just as quickly as their mandatory e-learning from day one of being on site.

Users would automatically be allocated the Site-Specific Training Modules relevant to their role on enrolment on the Platform and notified to complete the courses. Results are then lodged against the users training record on the platform and form part of each users compliance percentage.

"We have also been able to use T4A to deliver our site-specific training modules, which have now become part of our mandatory training matrix for all new starters."

The Result

Having adopted the platform and utilised the LMS to deliver their training courses and not just the T4A Library of courses, The Train4Academy platform now plays an important role in the process of onboarding new employees at the business, providing access to a range of courses specifically tailored to each employee's department or job role.

Additionally, Rebekah and her team have seen a significant increase in training completion rates across the business, with over 1,500 training courses delivered in less than 12 months to all learners at the business. All new employees have been provided access to site-specific onboarding materials far quicker than before.

The L&D Team can now effectively communicate live training statistics and levels to managers and leaders within the business by providing Management Suite access so that heads of departments and team leaders can also report on their team's training.

"Being able to share these results with our teams has driven some healthy competition between departments and teams, which has resulted in training being made a priority by each team as a leaderboard of compliance levels and training completions is available for all to see across the business."

Since working with Train4Academy, our experience has been extremely positive. The communication and response time from the team at T4A is second to none, and guidance and advice are provided whenever needed. By using Train4Academy and its platform, we have significantly increased the volume of training delivered across the business and made the task of training delivery easier to manage. The Training Matrix has also been a massive help in keeping ahead of when employees need to refresh their training."
